A Revolutionary Artist of Tibet
Jackson, David P. A Revolutionary Artist of Tibet: Khyentse Chenmo of Gongkar. Masterworks of Tibetan Painting Series. New York: Rubin Museum of Art, 2016.

A Revolutionary Artist of Tibet

Another beautifully printed art book from the Rubin Museum including the excellent scholarship of David Jackson. "Published in conjunction with an exhibition organized and presented by the Rubin Museum of Art, New York, September 5, 2014 through February 2, 2015....David Jackson focuses on the Khyenri style, the least known among the three major painting styles of Tibet, dating from the mid-fifteenth through the seventeenth century. The painting of Khyentse Chenmo, the founder of the Khyenri style who flourished from the 1450s to the 1490s, was significant for his radical rejection of the prevailing, classic Indic (especially Nepalese-inspired) styles with formal red backgrounds, enthusiastically replacing them with the intense greens and blues of Chinese landscapes. Jackson also brings to light several of Khyentse's paintings in museums outside Tibet, including some that have been unrecognized for over a century." (Source)

The Six Lamps
Achard, Jean-Luc, trans. The Six Lamps: Secret Dzogchen Instructions of the Bön Tradition. Somerville, MA: Wisdom Publications, 2017.

The Six Lamps

The Instructions on the Six Lamps is a profound and important work from the Bön Dzogchen tradition and is one of the root texts of the Zhangzhung Nyengyü (Oral Transmission of Zhangzhung) series of orally transmitted teachings. Considered to be the central work of the inner cycle of these teachings, it expertly details the principles of the natural state and its visionary marvels. The root text describes highly secret precepts of Dzogchen (Great Perfection) practice—the teachings of Trekchö and Thögel—as revealed by Tapihritsa to Gyerpung Nangzher Löpo.

The teachings in this text represent oral instructions transmitted by a single master to a single disciple in the mode known as “single transmission.” It is through such a practice that one can see the clear light of one’s own mind before achieving complete buddhahood. In this respect, the text contains a complete teaching of Dzogchen, from beginning to end. (Source: Wisdom Publications)

Grains of Gold
Chöpel, Gendun. Grains of Gold: Tales of a Cosmopolitan Traveler. Translated by Thupten Jinpa and Donald S. Lopez Jr. Buddhism and Modernity. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2014.

Grains of Gold

In 1941, philosopher and poet Gendun Chopel (1903–51) sent a large manuscript by ship, train, and yak across mountains and deserts to his homeland in the northeastern corner of Tibet. He would follow it five years later, returning to his native land after twelve years in India and Sri Lanka. But he did not receive the welcome he imagined: he was arrested by the government of the regent of the young Dalai Lama on trumped-up charges of treason. He emerged from prison three years later a broken man and died soon after.

Gendun Chopel was a prolific writer during his short life. Yet he considered that manuscript, which he titled Grains of Gold, to be his life’s work, one to delight his compatriots with tales of an ancient Indian and Tibetan past, while alerting them to the wonders and dangers of the strikingly modern land abutting Tibet’s southern border, the British colony of India. Now available for the first time in English, Grains of Gold is a unique compendium of South Asian and Tibetan culture that combines travelogue, drawings, history, and ethnography. Gendun Chopel describes the world he discovered in South Asia, from the ruins of the sacred sites of Buddhism to the Sanskrit classics he learned to read in the original. He is also sharply, often humorously critical of the Tibetan love of the fantastic, bursting one myth after another and finding fault with the accounts of earlier Tibetan pilgrims. Exploring a wide range of cultures and religions central to the history of the region, Gendun Chopel is eager to describe all the new knowledge he gathered in his travels to his Buddhist audience in Tibet.

At once the account of the experiences of a tragic figure in Tibetan history and the work of an extraordinary scholar, Grains of Gold is an accessible, compelling work animated by a sense of discovery of both a distant past and a strange present. (Source: University of Chicago Press)

Strange Tales of an Oriental Idol
Lopez Jr., Donald S., ed. Strange Tales of an Oriental Idol: An Anthology of Early European Portrayals of the Buddha. Buddhism and Modernity. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2016.

Strange Tales of an Oriental Idol

We tend to think that the Buddha has always been seen as the compassionate sage admired around the world today, but until the nineteenth century, Europeans often regarded him as a nefarious figure, an idol worshipped by the pagans of the Orient. Donald S. Lopez Jr. offers here a rich sourcebook of European fantasies about the Buddha drawn from the works of dozens of authors over fifteen hundred years, including Clement of Alexandria, Marco Polo, St. Francis Xavier, Voltaire, and Sir William Jones.

Featuring writings by soldiers, adventurers, merchants, missionaries, theologians, and colonial officers, this volume contains a wide range of portraits of the Buddha. The descriptions are rarely flattering, as all manner of reports—some accurate, some inaccurate, and some garbled—came to circulate among European savants and eccentrics, many of whom were famous in their day but are long forgotten in ours. Taken together, these accounts present a fascinating picture, not only of the Buddha as he was understood and misunderstood for centuries, but also of his portrayers. Bod kyi tshad gzhung thog ma
The current and second research monograph in the Series-Bod kyi tshad gzhung thog ma: Chos rgyal khri srong lde 'u btsan gyi rnam thar dang - bka' yang dag pa'i tshad ma'i brjod bya rjod byed la zhib jug by mKhan-po dPalbzang-dar-rgyas, one of the four pilots-is the fruit of many years of intensive training and research. The title of the monograph may be roughly rendered as: The First Tibetan Work on Logic and Epistemology: A Study of the Biography/Hagiography of the Religious King Khri-srong-lde 'u-btsan and the Text and Content of [His] "Testimony of the Correct Teachings [of the Buddha] " (bKa' yang dag pa'i tshad ma). The study contains a critical edition the bKa'yang dag pa'i tshad ma prepared by consulting all accessible textual witnesses, and an in-depth study of the main topics of the work, such as the four types of reasoning (yzukti: rigs pa). As its title states, it also contains a study of the life and works of King Khri-srong-lde'u-btsan, which is based on whatever textual evidences that could be found, and which provides the necessary background and context of the work under investigation. mKhan-po also addresses, among many other things, the issue of the authorship and the nature of the work. He puts forward his stance, as reflected in the title, that there is no adequate reason to reject the authorship of the bKa' yang dag pa'i tshad ma, and also that the work could be considered the first Tibetan work on Buddhist logic and epistemology. Like any other study, there will certainly be room for corrections and improvements, but all in all mKhan-po's study is exemplary in his pursuing the historical-philological approach to the study of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist texts and ideas. The value of mKhan-po's research is bound to be enduring, and it would be impossible for anyone wishing to pursue further study on the bKa yang dag pa'i tshad ma to ignore this important contribution.

Chos bzang rigs pa'i rnam dpyod
The current and third research monograph in the Series--Chos bzang rigs pa'i rnam dpyod: Rong zom pa ma hā pandi ta'i theg tshul rjod byed zhib dpyad zhu dag lung khungs ngos 'dzin dang - brjod bya gnas lugs rig par rtsad zhib tshom bu by mKhan-po bKra-shis-rdo-rje, one of the four pilots from the NNRC is a fruit of many years of intensive research. The main title of the monograph is a clear allusion to Mahāyānasūtrālamkāra 8.9a: sudharmatāyuktivicāransaya, the Tibetan rendering being chos bzang rigs pa'i rnam dpyad bsam pa can. mKhan-po, like Mi-pham rNam-rgyal-rgya-mtsho (1846-1912), is insinuating that Rong-zom Chos-kyi-bzang-po, as his name also indicates, was a rational person, a sudharmatāyuktivicāranāsaya (chos bzang rigs pas rmam dpyad bsam pa can). As the subtitle shows, the study consists of a critical edition of the Theg chen tshul 'jug, one of Rong-zom-pa's magna opera that deals with the philosophy of the Great Perfection (rDzogs-pa-chen-po), including identification of the sources therein either ad verbum or ad sensum and a study of the special ontology of the special Mahāyāna proposed in the work. There will certainly be lapses of commission, omissions, and imprecisions, and hence room for corrections and improvements, but in terms of the research methods and research outcome, mKhan-po's study can be considered ground-breaking. The value of mKhan-po's research in the field of historical-philological studies of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist texts and ideas is bound to be enduring and no one wishing to pursue further study of Rong-zom-pa's thoughts can afford ignoring this important contribution.
