Zhang ye shes sde'i lha ba'i khyad par la dpyad pa
The current and fourth research monograph in the Series Zhang ye shes sde'i lta ba'i khyad par la dpyad pa: Zhang ye shes sde'i lo rgyus la dpyad pa - lta ba'i khyad par gyi zhib dpyad zhu dag dang - de'i brjod bya dang rjod byed la dpyad pa by Slob-dpon-ma Karma-dbyangs-can (Lopen-ma Karma Yangchen Sherpa), one of the four pilots from the NNRC and the only nun scholar in the team-is a fruit of many years of intensive training and research. The title of the monograph may be roughly rendered as: An Investigation of Zhang Ye-shes-sde's Distinction/Distinguishing of the Views: A Study of the Accounts of Zhang Ye-shes-sde, A Critical Edition of the Distinction/Distinguishing of the Views, and A Study of Its Text and Contents. In this study, Slob-dpon-ma seeks to explore from various angles the life and works of Ye-shes-sde, one of the key translators during the earlier dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet, including his philosophical positions and how his works have been received by traditional Tibetan scholars and modern researchers. There are certainly lapses of commission, omissions, and imprecisions, and hence room for improvements, but in terms of the research methods and outcome, Slob-dpon-ma's study is commendable, and there is no doubt that its value would be enduring in the field of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies, and that it cannot be ignored by anyone wishing to pursue further study of Ye-shes-sde'i life and works.
